A DOG dumped with smelly, overgrown hair is really chuffed with his new home.

Keighley heritage railway boss Matt Stroh has taken in the white Shih Tzu called Bentley following his rescue by an animal welfare charity..

West Yorkshire Dog Rescue Centre vets had to shave two kilograms of matted, petrol-coated fur from Bentley’s body.

The dog’s former owners had handed him in with fur that was smelly, long, tangled, and coated in oil and chemicals.

Matt, chairman of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, and his wife Catherine agreed to the dog centre’s request to become Bentley’s new owners.

After seeing Bentley’s story on the charity’s Facebook page Catherine had posted a message of support.

The couple and their two sons already own a Lahasa called Dexter, which they got from the rescue centre, and Daisy, a Cavapoo.

When Bentley was first taken in by the rescue centre he was so frightened that he flinched at the touch.

But Matt, who lives in Long Preston, said the dog had immediately responded to his family’s care.

He said: “Bentley is such an affectionate little thing. He must have been looked after at some time in the past.

“He’s only been with us 24 hours but he settled in. He couldn’t leave us alone.”
