MYSTERY surrounds the death of a 34-year-old former Keighley man who was found dead at his flat by his mother.

Gareth Lewis’s mother Andrea went to his home at Brunswick House, Bingley, because she had not heard from him for a couple of days.

She said she had previously sent him home to get some sleep because he looked tired after a night out with friends.

The Bradford coroner’s officer is currently investigating the cause of Mr Lewis’s death, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

A post-mortem was carried out following his death on April 2, and the results of toxicology tests are awaited.

Mr Lewis’s mother Andrea Marshall, of Cornwall Avenue, Silsden, and father John Lewis, were this week anxiously waiting for news of what had happened.

Mrs Lewis said “I saw him on March 31. I said he looked tired, and he said he’d been up all night at his mate’s.

“I wasn’t concerned when he didn’t phone me because I thought he was in bed, but the next day he didn’t respond to my texts. The following day I went over to his flat and found him in bed."

Mr Lewis was born in Bradford and moved with his family to Keighley at the age of two, spending most of his childhood in Long Lee.

He attended Steeton and Long Lee first schools and Swire Middle School, in Long Lee, before attending Oakbank School in Keighley, leaving at 16.

Mr Lewis’s mother said: “He was always wheeling and dealing as a teenager. Him and his friends were always up to mischief when we lived in Long Lee.”

Mr Lewis had jobs with a variety of local companies over the years, including the pet food factory in Cullingworth, Windeck Paint in Crossflatts, and Landis Lund in Eastburn where he was a security guard.

His mother said: “After that he drifted along. He lived here in Silsden, then moved to the flat in Bingley about four years ago.”

Mr Lewis was keen on watching soccer and Six Nations rugby, and played football with his friends.

Mr Lewis’s father John said that as a teenager his son had been invited to try for a place with Keighley Cougars, through his grandfather William John Lewis who was connected with the rugby club, but he turned it down because he preferred football.

Mr Lewis also had a sister Devona, who lives in Eastburn, and a nephew Morgan.

Mr Lewis’s funeral service will take place tomorrow (April 17) at Oakworth Crematorium at 1pm.
