CHARITY walkers who aim to conquer 12 mountains in as many months had to contend with driving snow and hail during their latest challenge.

The group of businessmen was greeted with the atrocious conditions during an ascent of Helvellyn.

Member Rob Lewis, from Steeton, managing director of credit control agency Corporate & Commercial, said: "The summit is reached by traversing Striding Edge and Swirral Edge.

"In the finest of weather these are a challenge to even the most experienced mountaineer but throw in near gale-force winds, snow and hail and visibility of only 10 feet and you begin to imagine the magnitude of the challenge.

"We knew our treks would start ramping up as we approach the biggest ones in the summer, but I have to admit at times I was questioning whether there were easier ways to raise money for charity!"

The group, known as the Walk Society, is coining-in cash for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Its next test is Bowfell before taking on Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis.
