KEIGHLEY motorists flouting the law by using their mobile phones while driving are being warned about the dangers.

The use of hand-held mobiles behind the wheel has been outlawed for more than a decade.

But drivers locally are still being caught ignoring the legislation.

So far this year, four people from the Keighley News catchment area have been convicted of the offence at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service says motorists are four times more likely to crash if they use a mobile phone.

And it adds 44 per cent of young drivers surveyed admitted texting while behind the wheel.

Area manager, Ian Bitcon, said: "Road traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for young people aged between 15 and 19.

"People's distraction while driving could have devastating consequences, not just for themselves and their passengers, but for other road users too.

"Just drive – this is the message we want to put across."

Keighley Fire Station commander, Mark Helliwell, said it was "common sense" not to use a mobile phone while driving.

"You need to be alert for your own safety and the safety of your passengers," he added.

"Any distraction whilst driving can potentially cause an accident, which may result in serious injury or even loss of life."

Brigade staff are working with secondary schools across the district to educate students about the importance of responsible motoring.
