A DEVELOPER has applied to construct a new building housing flats and shops in Stockbridge, Keighley.

Bradford Council planners are considering proposals to locate the new property next to the old Bridge Pub, in Bradford Road. The former pub, now known as the Bridge Lounge, is currently being converted into a fish and chip restaurant.

The applicant wants to build the additional property on the western side of the pub, on land which used to be a beer garden, conservatory and children's play area.

If approved, the two-storey building would have space for five ground floor shops and five first-floor two-bedroom flats.

The new development and the adjacent existing building would have access to 45 car parking spaces, as well as three disabled parking bays, all situated to the north of both properties.

A design statement accompanying the application adds: "The eaves [of the new building] would be be kept at the same height as the adjacent Bridge lounge, so as to complement it.

"The front elevation would be set back from the Bridge Lounge, allowing for a raised pedestrian area giving access to the retail space.

"The car park space numbers have been calculated to allow for all proposed retail unit space with this application, and those already approved within the same site boundary. As such the vehicular access is unaffected.

"The site is adjacent to Bradford Road, so has good transport links, with bus stops nearby. Keighley Railway Station is within walking distance."
