A KEIGHLEY town councillor says he hopes schools will exploit the chance to get involved in a community fruit and vegetable growing project.

John Kirby, chairman of Keighley Town Council's allotments and landscapes committee, said Incredible Edible's intention to use previously disused land on the Guardhouse allotments site is an ideal opportunity for nearby primary schools to get involved.

The council has agreed to lease the land to Incredible Edible for 12 months.

Cllr Kirby stressed this area, which is close to St Andrew's Primary School, is very overgrown and has not been used for allotments for many years.

"If we find this project is not working out within the 12 months of the lease, the land will come back to the town council and it will then be turned into allotments," he said.

"As a council, we back this 100 per cent."
