NEW parking restrictions in Haworth Main Street will not make any difference unless they are rigorously enforced according to a frustrated trader.

Andy Gascoigne, who owns the Haworth Steam Brewery restaurant and bar at the top of Main Street said persistent obstructive parking immediately outside his business's front entrance is continuing despite signs being installed warning motorists this is not allowed.

He warned that unless wardens regularly patrol on foot in this area and fine those drivers who flout the rules the new signs will not be respected.

His business has been closed for refurbishment since January, and Mr Gascoigne stressed that he had been hoping the antisocial parking situation would be resolved for when he re-opens.

"The parking has always been a problem to be honest, even when they had double yellow lines on the street," he said.

"We're in the best position in Haworth for trade, but because the road widens where we are people think they can park here.

"We can't go out and speak to every driver who parks right outside our business and tell them they can't park there because we just get abuse.

"The drivers say 'I'm just off to the post office for a minute' or 'I'm just unloading'. There's always an excuse."

Mr Gascoigne said one elderly, disabled woman had been unable to get out of the restaurant when someone parked directly outside the entrance.

He added that the rear vehicle access to the property has also been obstructed too.

"I've spent a lot of money on this property and I want to open it again with the parking sorted out," he said.

"This situation isn't good for any business in Haworth, and it isn't good for Haworth's reputation as a tourist destination."
