JUST a few days remain for South Craven people to nominate their unsung heroes.

North Yorkshire County Council is staging its second annual community awards, which recognise the work of volunteers.

Last year, the names of 114 community groups, organisations and individuals were put forward for accolades.

There are categories for the best community project and group, plus volunteer of the year and young volunteer.

"Volunteers are becoming the backbone of an increasing number of aspects of life in North Yorkshire," said Councillor David Jeffels.

"Out of the financial challenges we have seen, and will continue to see, unsung heroes have emerged in our communities to help those around them."

Finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in October and each category winner will receive £1,000 for their project, group or nominated charity.

Visit northyorks.gov.uk/communityawards or call 01609 780780 to make a nomination. The closing date is Tuesday.
