A KEIGHLEY Town Council committee now has its youngest ever chairman.

Councillor Luke Maunsell, 20, was elected to chair the council's events and leisure committee earlier this month. (June)

Cllr Maunsell, who represents the council's Oakworth ward, said: "I am delighted to have taken up the role to further serve the people of my ward and this town.

"The committee is already considering or has agreed further excellent events for our town, and I hope all will fully embrace them."

Cllr Maunsell, who is part of the council's Labour group, was co-opted onto the council last June.

He was born in Keighley, attended Oakbank School and is currently studying broadcast journalism at Leeds University.

He said it was important for Keighley people to continue to have a good programme of public entertainments to look forward to throughout the year.

Cllr Maunsell added that he and his colleagues were planning to stage a "Yorkshire at the Beach" event in Keighley town centre during the weekend immediately before Yorkshire Day – July 29 to July 31.

This should include a variety of beach themed fun and activities for locals and visitors.
