PARKSIDE School students were ahead of the grown-ups when it came to choosing ‘in’ or ‘out’.

Last week they held their own referendum on whether the UK should stay in the European Union.

The Student Leadership Team delivered assemblies to each year group explaining what a referendum is and why the UK was having one, and sixth formers presented both sides of the argument.

Students were given a ballot paper and asked to vote either Remain, Leave or ‘not sure’.

Parental involvement worker Majella McColgan said: “All the information given to the students was impartial, and was obtained from the BBC website.

“The votes were counted during citizenship lessons in a formal setting with teams of counters and a returning officer. This was to educate our students on the formality of elections.”

“The election has been a great experience for all our students and has helped to educate them on the process involved in an election, even though they are not eligible to vote.”

The result of the vote had not been released when the Keighley News went to press.
