ALMOST half the district’s athletes travelling to the next Special Olympics World Cup games hail from Keighley.

There will be 23 athletes from the Keighley area travelling to Sheffield in the summer of next year as part of Bradford’s 55-strong team.

The local contingent includes five footballers, 11 horse riders, three ten-pin bowlers, two track and field competitors, one cyclist and one crown green bowler.

Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure (BDSL) has to raise £8,600 for the team to take part, including kit, training, travel and accommodation.

The athletes, who all have learning disabilities, will travel to Sheffield as part of the Yorkshire squad.

Some may go on to compete in the Special Olympics World Games, like local powerlifters James Crossley and Chris Woodhead who won medals in last year’s Los Angeles tournament.

BDSL chairman Hilary White said: “I am very proud of the numbers entering this time but we need support and sponsorship.”
