KEIGHLEY groups could share in a cash pot funded by money seized from criminals.

The latest round of grants under the Safer Communities Fund has been launched by West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson.

Organisations can apply for grants of up to £5,000, for projects on a crime prevention theme.

Since the fund was launched in February, 2014, over 300 projects have shared more than £1.3 million.

Beneficiaries in the last round earlier this year included Keighley's Welcome Project, which received £3,600 for its volunteer-run community cafe.

The cafe was set-up a year ago to cater for people affected by food poverty and loneliness.

Visitors are able to have a meal and donate as much or as little as they can afford.

People on low incomes are encouraged to learn how to grow their own food and cook low-cost nutritional meals through the project, which is part of the Keighley Food Poverty Action Partnership.

Mr Burns-Williamson said: "I am delighted we have been able to give so much money back to our communities for invaluable projects and services, especially at a time when austerity and budget cuts are biting hard.

"In this latest round, money will be allocated to projects which can demonstrate they are working specifically towards preventing crime. Investing in crime prevention is key to making sure our communities are safer and feel safer.

"I want this money to reach as many groups as possible, so if anyone knows of a project that could use some funding please urge it to have a look at the Safer Communities Fund.

"However the fund isn't just about the grant. We also actively encourage partnership working between groups and organisations, which often make new contacts at the fund awards evening."

Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins said the fund reinforced the message that crime doesn't pay.

"By reinvesting seized criminal assets we can support safer communities to make a real difference in their area," she added.

"I would encourage any organisation that feels it meets the necessary criteria to apply for a grant.

"I hope this money seized from those who cause harm to our communities can now be used for the benefit of all."
