NEIGHBOURS fought a blazing hedge this afternoon in Keighley to stop flames reaching a nearby house.
Householders on both sides of the garden in Prospect Crescent attacked the fire with hose reels as firefighters from Keighley and Bingley rushed to the scene.
The players spread to the house’s conservatory during the 3.30pm incident, damaging the wooden framework and UPVC windows.
Watch commander Mick Rhodes, from Keighley Fire Station, said: “There was an awful lot of smoke – we could see it on the hill as we came up Oakworth Road. Conifers create a lot of smoke.
“There was no damage to the main part of the house.
"The neighbours on either side attempted to fight the fire and did a good job, but didn't manage to put it out.
“It was a great attempt but we prefer people not to fight fires themselves. Our advice is get out and call the fire brigade.”
Mr Rhodes said the fire was accidental, possibly ignited by weed burning equipment.
The occupants of the house were on holiday.
