THE final set of plaques – each carrying a line of poetry penned by a Wilsden woman – in a project to mark the course of a hidden beck have been installed.

The latest stone markers were laid in the pavement at six locations throughout Bradford, meaning all but the first plaque near the Odeon are now in place.

A resin cast will be installed on the hoarding near the former cinema building until work is finished on the site to protect the plaque.

Organised by the Friends of Bradford’s Becks (FOBB) group, the 15 pavement plaques are carved out of stone and each features a line of a poem by Jane Callaghan, whose work was chosen in a competition which attracted nearly 30 entries.

The slabs are being placed in pavements between Thornton Road, by the former Odeon, through to Lower Kirkgate, past the Midland Hotel.

FOBB chairman Barney Lerner said: “I’m so pleased that the final pavement plaques for the beck trail have gone in.

“The sculptor Pat Walls has done a great job getting finished, despite one of the slabs having to be replaced twice because of cracks.

“And Bradford Council has been very supportive and organised installation in time for our World Rivers Day event in City Park on September 25.”
