EXTRA cash being ploughed into the region for infrastructure projects must be spent on a Shipley eastern by-pass – which would benefit Keighley's economy – claims a district MP.

Philip Davies says funding is currently unfairly being pumped into Labour heartlands by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Speaking in parliament, he warned Chancellor Philip Hammond against directing more money into the region until the issue was resolved.

Mr Davies said: "Please do not just blindly hand over any extra infrastructure spending in West Yorkshire to the Labour-dominated West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

"Instead can you make sure money can be spent in other parts of West Yorkshire, including on a Shipley eastern by-pass, which would benefit the local economy and those of Keighley and Pudsey constituencies too."

He added that officials from the Department for Transport had agreed to meet with Bradford Council and the Combined Authority about the by-pass project, after it was claimed Government criteria was preventing the scheme going ahead.

Mr Hammond said: "I will pass on the concerns to the Transport Secretary and ask him to take them into consideration when he makes his allocations."
