KEIGHLEY people are being warned to steer clear of loan sharks.

The message has been issued by social housing group Incommunities, as part of a festive awareness campaign.

A series of events is being staged across the district, including Keighley, to provide information and advice.

Also involved in the initiative are Bradford District Credit Union, Citizens Advice and the England Illegal Money Lending Team.

Adrienne Reid, assistant chief executive (neighbourhoods) with Incommunities, said: "At this time of year there is a real temptation for some people to look for loans to tide them over, but often this only makes things worse and can lead to long-term problems.

"We are delighted to be linking up with our partners to run these awareness sessions and send out a strong message that loan sharks have no place in our communities.

"We want to engage with families and show everyone that there is help available."

The Keighley event takes place at the Hainworth Wood Community Centre on Thursday, December 15, from 10am to 3pm.

The session will include a visit from graffiti artist Martin Haighurst, who will work with children to create a large mural spelling out a loan shark hotline number – 0300 555 2222.
