BIG LOCAL is offering its “greatest hits” to the people of Parkwood during a special pre-Christmas event.

Wild food cooking, archery, seasonal songs and a Lantern Parade are among activities at the Winter Celebration on Sunday, December 18.

Keighley Big Local, a major regeneration project run by local people, has run activities throughout the year in Parkwood.

The volunteers have worked closely on the events with Parkwood Primary School the Friends of Park Wood.

Big Local coordinator Shaun O’Hare said: “We're building on some very successful projects in the area and bringing together some of the more popular activities, all delivered by Keighley based social enterprises.”

The Winter Celebration will run from 1pm to 3pm.

There will be a campfire with hot chocolate and marshmallows provided by Forest School company Get Out More.

Aire Valley Forest Schools will provide fun activities, while qualified instructor Greg Hoyle will teach archery.

There will be wild food cooking with the Healthy Growing Initiative and seasonal songs around the fire with Shared Harmonies.

A lantern parade will finish the event, which runs from 1pm to 3pm in Park Wood.

There are entrances to the wood at Kendal Street in Parkwood, Dale View Grove in Long Lee, and Delph Croft View at Parkwood Rise.

Mr O’Hare said Big Local were encouraging local residents to wrap up warm and join them with family and friends to see the beauty of the Park Wood.

He added: “It is a wonderful site and there are strong signs that the fantastic work of the Friends of Park Wood is assisting in the building stronger communities and in civic pride in the area."

Rachael Neald, from the Healthy Growing Initiative, said: "There will be lots of Christmas cheer and a chance to make a wreath and much more to take home and decorate your houses with.

“There will also be hot drinks made on the wood fire and wild food to taste throughout the afternoon.

"We ran a pilot session at Parkwood play area earlier in the year which proved really popular, particularly the crayfish cocktails and road kill stew with pheasant and pigeon, so please come down and see how good it is for yourself!"

Keighley Big Local is a 10-year regeneration programme that is bringing £1 million to the ‘Keighley Valley’ area, which runs from Stockbridge to Ingrow.

The projects are being carried out by a committee of volunteer residents.
