A DISTRICT MP claims the people of Kashmir should be allowed a referendum on how they are governed – as the UK population was given a vote on EU membership.
Philip Davies – whose Shipley constituency includes Cullingworth and Denholme – said that as tensions between India and Pakistan continued to escalate over who governs Kashmir, the people must have a say.
He was speaking during a Commons debate which called on the Government to raise the matter with the United Nations.
"Surely it is not a question of supporting the Indian Government or the Pakistani Government – it is about supporting the people of Kashmir," said Mr Davies.
"I campaigned for many years for a referendum to decide whether our country should be governed by the European Union.
"Surely the people of Kashmir should be afforded the same liberty."
