A MOTHER and daughter from Keighley are playing an iconic mother and daughter duo in the musical Gypsy.

Laura and Chloe Judge, both familiar faces on the Keighley Playhouse stage, will be performing with Ilkley Amateurs.

They play the lead roles of Rose and Louise when the show runs from March 8 to 11 at the town King’s Hall.

David Hardman, who also has strong connections with Keighley as an actor and director, will play Rose’s father Pop.

And the director of Gypsy is Mark Allen, who has been a musicals leading man and a panto villain for Keighley Amateurs.

Gypsy is a 1959 ‘musical fable’, written by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, which is loosely based on the memoirs of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee.

The story focuses on her mother Rose, the ultimate ‘stage mother’, following her dreams and efforts to raise two daughters to perform onstage, and casting an affectionate glance on the hardships of showbusiness life.

The musical features well-known songs like Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Together (Wherever We Go), Small World, You Gotta Get a Gimmick, Let Me Entertain You and All I Need Is the Girl.

Many critics have named Gypsy as the greatest American musical, with one of the most complex characters in the artform.

The musical has been revived many times since its original Broadway production, including in the West End in 2014 starring Imelda Staunton and Peter Davison.

Gypsy runs at King’s Hall from Wednesday to Friday March 8-10 at 7.15pm, and the Saturday March 11 at 5.30pm.
