KEIGHLEY people are being urged to get baking to raise money for Help for Heroes.

The charity's annual Bake for Heroes campaign runs from April 15 to 30.

Supporters are asked to stage sales of home-baked goodies to coin-in cash for the organisation, which helps injured ex-service personnel.

Among those getting behind the initiative is Bradford woman Sandy Docherty, who shot to fame on hit TV show The Great British Bake Off.

She will take part in a launch event at Titus Salt School, Baildon, where she works as a child welfare officer and runs an after-school cookery club.

"I'm all about getting people to have a go at baking," she said.

"When I was asked to work with Help for Heroes, I saw the opportunity to 'join the dots' – what better opportunity for the kids here to meet veterans but also for the veterans to see how much admiration the kids have for them? It seemed the perfect way to 'bake down' some barriers!"

During the event, veterans will be paired with students and they will work together to create a cake from a specific recipe.

A winner will be selected by three judges, including Help for Heroes beneficiary and food blogger Giles Farringdon.

The school has already organised its own cake sale to raise funds for the charity.

And a group of students has visited the Phoenix House Recovery Centre at Catterick, a 50-bedroom complex where veterans are given a range of help and support.

Its facilities include classrooms, an IT suite, art room, wood workshop, training kitchens, gymnasium, a health and wellbeing room and cafe.
