AN ORGANISATION which runs a healthy living programme in Keighley has welcomed a new top-level push to crack down on junk food.

ABL Health has applauded a report from MPs which says the Government must do more to reduce cut-price and multi-buy offers on unhealthy foods.

The Health Select Committee document also demands a toughening of rules over junk food advertisements in a bid to combat childhood obesity.

Dr Sheena Bedi, chief executive of ABL Health, said: "This report highlights once again significant gaps in the Government's childhood obesity strategy, which barely touches the surface in tackling the obesity crisis in this country.

"I agree that tougher measures need to be implemented to reduce the number of multi-buy, cut-price offers on unhealthy food in our supermarkets.

"Instead of giving voluntary targets, we should be introducing regulations on discounting that apply to businesses across the board.

"With the staggering evidence that a third of children aged two to 15 are overweight or obese, surely it is clear that stronger, immediate action needs to be taken to confront this major public health problem.

"We must all work together to turn the tide of obesity and create a better, healthier future for our children."
