AN OAKWORTH dog handler sold one of his animals during the annual spring sale of working sheep dogs at Skipton Auction Mart.

Richard Atkins was one of many dog owners, breeders and farmers from across the UK and Ireland who attended the event earlier this month. (May)

Mr Atkins attracted a Scottish buyer who paid 3000 guineas for his three-year-old tri-coloured bitch, named Halloverhill Meg.

Meg is a daughter of Lancashire breeder Tom Lawrenson’s Clyde, who finished fourth in the 2011 World Sheepdog Trials, and TR Riley’s Tweeddale Bell.

The Auction Mart said it was now firmly established as the UK’s leading sheep dog sales venue, this time attracting a strong turnout of 120 dogs.

Trade was slightly lower than previous years, with everything a little harder to sell, though registered dogs and bitches averaged considerably more than the last sale in February.

Future seasonal working sheep dog sales at Skipton are due to be staged on Fridays, July 21 and October 13.
