A VETERAN Keighley community activist used his 80th birthday to drum up support for a charity which helps fundraise to fight cancer.

Charlie Bhowmick, of Spring Gardens, who has himself had this illness, was 80 on May 12, though his party was staged late last month at Steeton Hall. More than 80 friends and family attended the occasion.

Mr Bhowmick said: "I told everyone that I didn't want any presents at all, so could they please donate towards Yorkshire Cancer Research Keighley & Craven instead.

"I'm happy to say that we've raised just over £500. I feel humbled by the generosity of all those people who've supported such a good cause."

Mr Bhowmick said he thoroughly enjoyed the party, which featured live music by a band from Durham and a ceilidh dance.

Val Broughton, treasurer of Yorkshire Cancer Research Keighley and Craven, said: "As a committee we're really grateful for any support we get, and we're very pleased that Mr Bhowmick chose us."
