CHILD safety tips are on offer to South Craven parents and carers.

And people are being urged to share their own advice.

North Yorkshire County Council issued the plea in support of national Child Safety Week, which begins on June 5.

The council, in partnership with Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, has produced a booklet aimed at helping parents and carers to identify potential dangers in the home.

As well as containing advice, the book – Confident Parents, Safer Children – outlines the most common types of injury and what can cause them and encourages people to carry out self-assessments.

"The number of hospital admissions caused by injuries in children in the county is a serious issue," said Katie Needham, consultant in public health for North Yorkshire.

"Many injuries are preventable and we can take action to reduce their occurrence.

"The majority in children under five occur in the home, so the booklet shows parents and carers how to minimise risks through a self-assessment of their home environment and the opportunity to think about an action plan to improve safety for their child, in partnership with their health visitor or family support worker.

"Taking time to think about your own home and make appropriate adaptations, such as fireguards and safety gates, can help to make the environment safer for your children."

The booklet can be accessed at northyorks.gov.uk/article/23548/Childrens-centres.

People are also invited to get involved in the campaign by sharing tips via social media.
