HUNDREDS of pounds were raised for charity at an event staged on Saturday by Silsden Amateur Rugby League Football Club.

And cash, for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, is still coming in.

The event – sponsored by John Carey Design and supported by Clever Energy Boilers – featured a match between Silsden Storm under-12s and a team from West Bowling, coached by former Keighley Cougars stalwart Glen Barraclough.

Silsden ARLFC secretary Margaret Procter said: "The youngsters put on a great show of skilful rugby, demonstrating that the game has a strong future in our area with some talented young people on display."

The match was followed by an open-age encounter between Silsden and an all-stars outfit brought together by former Cougars skipper Phil Stephenson, who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, and captained by former Silsden coach Neil Jordan.

Also playing were Mark Adams and his son and current Cougars Academy player Jak, Chris Hannah, Mr Stephenson's brother Andy and nephew Alex, a member of the Bradford Bulls Academy team.

Ex-Cougar Karl Smith also featured, alongside Stuart Calvert and a host of former Keighley and Silsden stars.

They were coached by Graham Sheffield.

"The result was a victory for Phil's team but in truth the real winner was rugby league and the MND charity," said Mrs Procter.

"We would like to say a big thank-you to everyone for all the support and donations received, ranging from the purchase of a raffle ticket to referee Nigel Eaton doing the whole day for the price of a cup of coffee!"
