Firefighters have carried out a "physically challenging" animal rescue in Oxenhope last night.

Crews were called at about 6.45pm to a report of a cow stuck in a culvert 4ft deep and in 2ft of water.

A fire service spokesman said: "This was a physically challenging incident for the crews as they had to stop the cow falling into sumps, which were also in the culvert.

"They used strops and built a ramp to assist and it was released, without injury, back into its field."

The Technical Rescue Unit and support pump from Cleckheaton attended with a specialist technical rescue officer. The incident happened near the Waggon and Horses in Hebden Bridge Road, Oxenhope.
