SHOPPERS at Keighley's Airedale Centre were greeted by an unexpected sight as a small but eye-catching band of people gathered to highlight this coming weekend's Haworth Steampunk event. (Nov 24-26)

Event organisers Hilary Sedgwick and Neal Rylatt along with author and publisher Leesa DeVantier donned their Steampunk costumes and met shoppers in the centre on Saturday. (Nov 18)

Leesa said: "The welcome we received was lovely, and many people were eager to know more about what exactly a Steampunk is and where we had bought our attire.

"Most were intrigued by the many different styles and outfits, and the fact we're an inclusive group so come from all age ranges, and from all walks of life

"Although dressing up isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, that’s not mandatory if people want to come and enjoy a splendid weekend in Haworth and immerse themselves in the jolly atmosphere that always accompanies a Steampunk outing."

This weekend in Haworth will feature two markets in Haworth Village Hall and West Lane Methodist Chapel, running from 10am till 5pm on Saturday and 10am till 4pm on Sunday.

Other attractions and activities will include tea duelling, concisely described by the weekend's organisers as "competitive biscuit dunking".

The Bartitsu & Antagonistics Forum will be demonstrating martial arts, historical fencing and historical self defence.

Leesa added: "There will be other sights, sounds and tastes taking over the village, so there will be plenty to see, do, eat and drink.

"This event also raises money for charity. In the four years that the weekend has run so far, it has raised approximately £10,000 for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.

"Not only that, but as the village has become accustomed to the weekend, the shops on the Main Street have got involved.

"For months in advance Haworth businesses have been proudly displaying posters and handing out leaflets to publicise the event.

"And this year some Keighley businesses have kindly done so too.

"We're expecting Steampunks to flock to the village from all over the country in their finery.

"It will be fun, free, family-friendly and will help the local economy and a charity – the perfect combination.

"The Steampunk community are a friendly bunch who make all feel welcome.

"So whether people are new, a full steam ahead seasoned pro or just curious as to what this is about, they will be able to spend a very enjoyable day or two in Haworth."
