VOLUNTEERS from a charity which supports parents of premature and sick babies distributed gifts to families on Airedale Hospital's neonatal unit.

The Bliss Airedale team handed out chocolates and cards, plus knitted items produced by supporter Rita Mulryan.

Members visited the unit on Friday (Nov 17), to mark World Prematurity Day.

There was also a private event in the family room, offering support to parents with babies on the unit.

And a public bake sale took place, raising £276.

Half the proceeds will help Bliss in its work producing materials for families, running a helpline and providing training for volunteers, whilst the remainder will go towards planned work on the unit.

The activities were co-organised by Alex Wright, a Bliss volunteer.

Her seven-year old son spent several weeks on the unit.

"The love and goodwill we had from so many customers and bakers on Friday made me feel warm and fuzzy inside!" she said.

"The nursing team was delighted to see many of its former patients return too.

"When a baby is born premature or sick, that stays with you forever. My aim as a Bliss volunteer is to provide these families with a safe haven and a chance to celebrate their unique journey."
