A NEWLY-opened barbershop in Keighley joined a campaign to support elderly men at Christmas.

Louise Briggs invited lonely pensioners in for a free trim as part of the #ShaveTheDay campaign run by fragrance brand Tabac with charity Age UK.

Louise said five men came to the door of her salon, Busty Barbers on Church Street, to tell their stories and donate to Age UK.

One man, 90-year-old Denis, came down from his working farm. Other customers continue to donate during the day, raising a total of £50.

Louise said: “The warmth and love shared in the shop was emotional from one gent to another.

“It mattered so much to me to raise more awareness, I wanted to continue this another day to try help someone else, whether a shop full or just that one person to make a difference.

“For a new business in a small shop I was delighted to achieve this. I was touched and continue to feel overwhelmed by Keighley community and support in my business venture.”

Tabac organised #ShaveTheDay to encourage barbers to spend quality time with older communities on the run-up to Christmas.

The aim was to combat the loneliness felt amongst an increasing number of British male pensioners during the traditionally busy December period.

UK barbers were asked to offer much-needed conversation and complimentary treatments, while Tabac’s website and social media platforms featured a video highlighting the positive impact that a shave and pampering session can have on older gentlemen.

The video featured members of The Geezers, a group supported by Age UK, that meets weekly in the Bow area of London and provides social activities for men aged 50 and over.
