KEIGHLEY people are being urged to be vigilant after three cases of meningitis were confirmed in the region.

Charity Meningitis Now said people should be aware of the symptoms and act immediately if they or a loved one showed signs of the disease.

Chief executive officer Dr Tom Nutt said that despite the confirmed cases, in the Halifax and Huddersfield areas, meningitis remained a rare disease.

But he added: "We encourage everyone to be mindful of meningitis at this time of year, as figures show that people are 2.2 times more likely to be affected by meningococcal meningitis in the winter months.

"Everybody should remain vigilant and ensure that their children's vaccinations are up to date.

"However, in the absence of vaccinations for all causes of the disease, getting to know the signs and symptoms and seeking urgent medical help if meningitis is suspected is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones."

Common signs of meningitis include fever, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, severe muscle pain and headache, a stiff neck, a dislike of bright lights, convulsions or seizures, a pale/blotchy skin and spots or a rash.
