DISTRICT health chiefs are urging people to "stay warm" and look out for those who may need extra help.

Their plea came as figures showed that between 25,000 and 30,000 deaths every winter in the UK are linked to cold weather.

Dr James Thomas – for NHS Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group – said: "Keeping warm over winter can protect you from colds and flu as well as more serious conditions such as pneumonia – and even heart attacks or strokes.

"We are advising people to stay inside and keep warm if it is very cold outside, particularly if you suffer from a heart or respiratory problem.

"If your journey is necessary, make sure you take extra care, wrap-up warm and importantly wear flat sensible shoes in case it is icy.

"Look out for vulnerable relatives or neighbours during the cold weather to make sure they are safe and well.

"Check they have stocks of food and medicines so they don't need to go out during very cold weather and are warm enough, especially at night."

Other advice includes:

* Stay healthy by eating well and being active – making time to spend with friends and family

* You may not feel thirsty in cold weather, but it's important to have plenty of hot or cold drinks

* Stay warm and wrap-up in several thin layers of clothing rather than one thick layer

* Try to keep your home warm to at least 18C, even if it's just in one room

* Stay tuned for weather forecasts, and ensure you are stocked with food and medications in advance of wintry conditions
