DOZENS of people gave up their time to take part in a day to tidy up and enhance the newly re-named Oakworth Village Hall.

The event on April 15 at what was previously known as Holden Hall was organised by Oakworth Community Trust, which is managing the building.

The Holden Hall name has been preserved, as it is now the name of the largest room within the building. Two smaller spaces have been named the Providence Room and the Lidget Room.

Trust secretary Martin van der Boon said: "It was a very successful day and we had about 30 people turn up throughout the course of it.

"It was hard work but the volunteers were very enthusiastic and willing to come back and do this again. They made a big difference."

Outside the hall, people cut back undergrowth, widened access to some steps and put up a new "Oakworth Village Hall" sign.

Inside they completely re-plastered a damaged upstairs wall, cleared out and re-painted an office, cleaned all of the property's 101 chairs, re-painted a toilet and cleaned windows and carpets.

Mr van der Boon added: "We even cleaned up all the building's convection heaters, which hadn't been done for 10 years or more. The difference that made was astounding.

"We also had some pieces of shelving fitted or repaired, and some volunteers supported the rest by keeping them refreshed with teas and coffees."

Councillor Luke Maunsell, a Keighley town councillor for Oakworth ward, said: ""I was delighted to help the wonderful Oakworth Community Trust at their 'Big Clean Up' and am so proud of how far they have come.

"Just over a year ago, it looked like Holden Hall was going to close but now, thanks to the amazing work of the trust, it has a new lease of life.

"I look forward to continuing my work with the trust. They really are the future of the village."
