AN event takes place in Keighley on Saturday (Apr 28) to mark International Workers Memorial Day.

The public is being invited to attend the gathering, in Town Hall Square at 11am.

Main speaker is MP John Grogan.

Others present will include a representative of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the death of firefighter Jeff Naylor, who lost his life while attending a house fire in Keighley.

This year is also the fifth anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh, in which more than 1,100 people died and thousands more were injured.

"It is estimated that worldwide a worker dies as a result of injury or disease at work every 11 seconds," said Dave Towers, for Keighley Trades Council, which is organising the event with the town council.

"International Workers Memorial Day is important to raise awareness of this senseless carnage, with its twin theme 'Remember the Dead: Fight for The Living'."
