ORGANISERS of a historic singing festival hope the event will be music to the ears of Keighley people.

The Yorkshire and the North-East Welsh Hymn-Singing Festival, the Cymanfa Ganu, takes place on May 12.

Secretary Eileen Walker, from Laycock, says anyone is welcome to attend.

The event – which this year is being held at Lindley Methodist Church, near Huddersfield – normally attracts a congregation of about 100.

And people travel from as far afield as Newcastle, Nottingham and Manchester to take part.

"The leader this time will be the Rev Philip Barnett – originally from Y Bala – and our organist will be Trystan Lewis," said Mrs Walker.

"Most of the hymns are sung in Welsh, but spoken parts of the services are in Welsh and English."

There are two services, from 2pm to 3.30pm and 4.45pm to 6.30pm.

People should take a snack for the interval, when tea and coffee will be available and then again at the end of the second session.

A collection will be taken to help support the festival in the future.
