Patients at a Keighley doctors’ surgery have played a part in appointing a new GP, who starts on Monday.
Members of the Holycroft Surgery patient council were involved in the interviewing process which led to the appointment of Dr Paul Bolton.
Dr Bolton qualified from Leicester University in 2000 and spent a year as a house officer in various hospitals.
The following year he and his wife moved to Brisbane, Australia, where they stayed for 18 months.
“I spent a month of that time working in an outback town as the only doctor for the town’s 4,000 inhabitants — I have never complained about long hours in this country again!” said Dr Bolton.
“It was a beautiful place but made us realise how much we valued friends and family back in the UK and what a truly green and pleasant land we come from.”
He then successfully applied to the Yorkshire GP training scheme and qualified in 2006.
He also passed higher professional exams with distinction, becoming a member of the Royal College of GPs.
Dr Bolton has since worked at several practices in the Shipley area.
