Keighley children have turned traffic wardens to stop parents parking dangerously outside their school.

Five students at Our Lady of Victories Primary School, Guard House Road, Keighley, go on patrol every day at home time.

They wave placards and write down registration numbers of cars parking illegally or irresponsibly.

Their presence has already had an effect on some motorists while other parents have given support.

Problems include drivers parking on zig-zag lines or double parking as hundreds of children leave the school.

Pupils became involved after a member of staff was abused by a motorist when she asked him to move.

She approached the school council – made up of pupils — and asked it to discuss the issue.

Members made warning placards and went on patrol with high visibility jackets and clipboards.

They wrote down the registration numbers of offenders and passed them to their local Police Community Support Officer.

The officer intends to trace the drivers’ addresses and send them warning letters.

Jennifer Taylor, year four teacher and co-ordinator of the school council, was impressed with the students’ efforts. She said: “Drivers are double parking, or dropping off children outside the school gates.

“One day a parent parked on the zig-zags, pulled his window down and called for his son.

“This campaign is having such an effect that one parent phoned to say sorry that her husband had done it.

“We get other parents giving the thumbs up as they pass.”

Megan Jessop, one of the children, said: “It’s to stop people parking, because they could cost someone their life. They could run people over because they can’t see past.”

Another pupil, Iaon Shutt, was pleased that many people were supporting the school council’s campaign.
