Jane's business is made of write stuff

A businesswoman is making it her mission to fight for the future of the good old-fashioned letter.

Jane Scott recently launched her bespoke stationery company Pickwick Paperie at the Store in Cavendish Street. She is one of several fledgling traders using the Store as a showcase for their business ideas.

Jane made her plea for a return to handwriting instead of emailing, just as a historic letter was put on public show for the first time.

Winston Churchill wrote the tender letter to his wife just before he went to fight on the Western front during the First World War.

The note, meticulously scribed on two sides of notepaper in 1915, was only to be opened in the event of Churchill’s death.

It is being displayed as part of the Last Post exhibition at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms in London, exploring the wartime role of the Post Office.

Jane said: “Most people can’t remember the last time they received a hand-written letter, yet all of us enjoy these rare moments.

“A letter can be an incredibly personal and intimate way of communicating. There is such a long history associated with letter writing, the note crafted by Churchill being just one example.

“It would be a tragedy if the literary skills associated with this were lost.

“Christmas is the perfect time to take up writing again by including a hand-written note in your Christmas card bringing news and a smile to the person who receives it!”

Jane said her passion for paper began when she wrote letters to friends around the world as a child.

She said: “Pursuing a career in the retail of specialist and bespoke stationery enables me to promote design-led paper products which make writing letters and giving gifts as special as receiving them.”

The Store is a project bringing together Bradford Council’s Kickstart business support programme and Park Lane College Keighley. The aim is to provide skills training and test trading opportunities for local people.
