Grandmother-of-five Bev Stewart came up with a novel way to prevent family squabbling over the best seat in the house this Christmas.
After years of fighting over the comfiest armchair in front of the television, Bev, from Prior Street, in Stockbridge, decided to auction off the much-sought-after position on eBay.
Now her daughter-in-law Alexis Stewart and her 11-month-old baby son, Mark, will be sitting pretty after a winning bid of £13.50 for the sumptuous chair.
Bev and her husband, David, expect a 25-strong “rabble of Stewarts”, extended family and friends on Boxing Day. Guests have been battling each other on the auction website to win the prized place, which Bev says is the “perfect seat”.
Bev explained: “There is always arguing over who gets it.
“It is straight in front of the TV and has got the coffee table at the side for you to rest your drink on and the TV remote, so everybody wants to sit there.
“Last year I had a heavily pregnant daughter and daughter-in-law who both gave birth in January, so they got the seat most of the time. But this year it has been given up for grabs.”
But Mrs Stewart also has a more serious reason for deciding to put the seat up for auction.
She said: “My brother-in-law, Peter, was in a bad road accident three weeks ago on West Lane, and is seriously ill in Airedale Hospital. He has come out of intensive care with a lot of broken bones and we think he will be in there for a few months yet.
“The staff at Airedale are fantastic. I cannot speak highly enough of the hospital.
“When such a large family descended on them, when Peter first went into hospital, to ask what was going on and wanting to see him, they gave us a private room and treated us really well.”
More money will be raised on Boxing Day for the ICU unit at Airedale.
Bev said: “We will have a whip round on the day to raise some more money.
Alexis has an 11-month-old baby called Mark who will probably share the seat with her but she will definitely have it all day.”
