Bradford Council has appointed consultants and landscapers to look into the best way to preserve and enhance Haworth’s Main Street setts.

Traffic using the road has led to the setts becoming loose, damaged and in need of restoration. Members of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council warned about mounting concern over their condition in early 2007.

Now the district council has called in engineering consultants Sanderson Associates and landscape architects Camlin Lonsdale to investigate.

Councillor Anne Hawkes-worth, Bradford’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “Main Street in Haworth is a treasure that needs to be carefully repaired and restored. Before we can start to understand the full scale of this project, we need to find out more about the origins of the setts and how they are best preserved.

“We also need to fully understand the costs of the project and look at avenues for funding.”

Parish council chairman, Cllr John Huxley, said: “We have been working closely with Bradford Council on this project because we believe that the setted streets of Haworth are an important part of the village’s heritage.”
