A mother and her teenage daughter were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation following a blaze in an attic bedroom.

The fire started when a TV set, which had been left on, burst into flames.

Firefighters — called to the terrace house in Nightingale Street, Keighley, at 3.30am, on Saturday — used a water jet to extinguish the blaze, which caused smoke damage to the loft area.

The occupants were taken to Airedale Hospital and the Red Cross fire victim support team provided comfort.

Keighley Fire Station watch manager Warren Ellison warned people who converted attics to remember to install smoke detectors. He said: “The woman asleep in the loft area was very lucky — she woke up at the sound of the flames — because there wasn’t a smoke detector installed there.

“They had one on the ground and first floors but a smoke detector should always be installed near any bedroom.”

He added that the fire service was happy to provide and install smoke detectors free of charge when requested. He said it was important to turn off TV sets at the plug socket and not leave them on standby.
