Call for support as all set for a bumper gala

A final “rallying call” has been issued to the public to turn out in force for Keighley Gala.

Chairman Brian Hudson praised people’s support in the lead-up to this Saturday’s extravaganza.

And he said he hoped crowds would go along on the day for what promised to be a bumper event. “We have had a very positive response and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has come forward to help out,” he said. “We are always keen to hear from anybody wanting to assist so if you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch. And we’re looking forward to seeing as many people as possible come along to enjoy the parade and the activities in the park.”

The annual event will begin as usual with the crowning of the gala queen in Town Hall Square, at noon. This year’s queen is Rebecca Lund, who will be attended by Amy Verity (junior queen), Lucy Shutt (princess), Tamara Miller (rosebud) and Zain Miller (pageboy).

The procession will set off from Goulbourne Street at 1pm and follow a shorter-than-normal route through the town along South Street, High Street, North Street, Cavendish Street and Bradford Road.

Among those parading will be Haworth Riding for Disabled, Keighley in Bloom with Horses at Work, classic Minis, mopeds, a jazz band, the Revolution Show Corps, line dancers, army and air cadets and the veterans, who will travel on a vintage bus.

Attractions at Victoria Park will include stalls, the Wakefield Pie Shop, face painting, a balloon modeller and performances from the Revolution Show Corps.

Admission will be free but there will be collection tins and buckets for donations and the penny wagon will once again take part in the parade.

They say that Oakworth Gala falls on the same day as Keighley Gala. If this is true then that is pure bad planning by someone.

Kevin Costner:
I’m given to understand that Cllr Lockley was well and truly stuffed this evening in Keighley’s Star Chambers as the old brigand tried to make him look him silly. What they didn’t realise was that they showed themselves for what they really are!
The reports that I’ve received have proved to me what nasty people in the Keighley Town Council can do to destroy the credibility that the few are fighting for. Cllr Lockley didn’t stand a chance, as interruptions from Cllr Wright and Mitchell silenced him. Even the Town Clerk backed off. Cllr Samuels had to ask twice for permission from Cllr Mitchell if he could continue to talk but was seemingly overruled by Cllr Wright. That was not the end of the peevish behaviour, as the spitting and jeers continued by the High Command.
I must be in Chambers next month, it seems fun. Bring your friends as Bradford Council doesn’t seen to want to engage whatsoever with us hillbilly’s, or is it sillybilly’s?
As for the fact that Oakworth has picked the same day for its Gala, are you suggesting that the date has been picked to upset the Keighley Gala Committee and Cllr Hudson, no the good people in Oakworth would never do something like that, surely not, but then again I can think of one or two people in the area who would!
In a letter in the Keighley News Mr Speller, not a friend of Cllr Mitchell, made comment: Now I’m not sure if somebody is being kind or unkind to Cllr Mitchell, please let me know.

Oh dear, Cllr Graham Mitchell has been ridiculed just because he tries to be an amateur traffic engineer on Keighley Town Council. He’s not doing any harm, as nobody listens to him because of his amateur status. He was once a film extra on a film, The Railway Children, and nobody took any notice of him then. Leave him alone, he is part and bluster of Keighley’s grand past history. He’ll soon retire to the lure of the Keighley Town Council’s Sensory Gardens in Dock Royd, Oakworth where he can entertain more schemes for improving Protocol, Standing Orders, traffic control, Civic Pride and amateur bus driving for the community. Graham, as an ex teacher, I think you should send Mr Speller to the corner of the classroom for his impertinence. More of the same I say Graham, Oakworth and Keighley needs people like you, let’s have laughter!

You could be right blt1,keighley. Now that I've come to realise who the good ones and the bad ones are, I've become wary of certain persons from Oakworth.
