Businesses run by disabled people are featured in two-day exhibition

The vision and inspirational attitudes of disabled entrepreneurs featured in a two-day event in Keighley.

K-DEX 2010, an exhibition and seminar programme, was staged at Temple Row by the Keighley & District Disabled People’s Centre (KDDPC).

More than 20 businesses run by disabled people took part. Visitors attended from as far afield as Leeds, Huddersfield and Oldham.

KDDPC chairman, Dr Mike Plumb, said: “This is the first time we have instigated and hosted such an ambitious event.

“The exhibition put into focus the determination of disabled people to be recognised for what they can do rather than accept the negative perceptions of what others may believe they cannot do.” The event was launched by district councillor Zafar Ali, who chairs Keighley Area Committee.

As part of the opening ceremony he also welcomed three new companies to the centre’s corporate membership scheme.

He said: “I am encouraged that this event will do much to raise the profile of Keighley in the wider district as a forward-thinking and inclusive community. Keighley has a pioneering heritage where the mould has been broken many times in the face of progress.

“K-DEX is another first for the town, which again shows the true spirit of innovation and development that makes it such an example to others.”

Plans are already being drawn up for next year’s K-DEX.
