Children have been taught how to knit the classic symbol of fallen soldiers to raise money for this year’s Poppy Appeal.
More than 20 members of Lees Primary School’s Knitting Club created about 60 poppies during the first half of their school term.
They have already sold so many that they plan to make even more to meet the demand.
The knitting club was set up in September with support from the school’s head teacher, Gill Holland. It is run by two members of staff — Angela Broadbent and Sharon Treece — along with a team of volunteers.
Mrs Treece said: “As with all new ventures we were unsure as to how popular it would be. So many children applied for places in the club that a waiting list had to be created. The children are being taught basic knitting techniques, “For each half of the term we wanted to have a focus to enable us to show the children how the skills they are learning could be used.
“For the first half of this term we worked towards producing knitted poppies, which the children could then sell for the Poppy Appeal.”
She said the youngsters were now moving on to producing items to sell at the school’s Christmas fair, which is on Saturday, November 27.
