Drivers in Keighley have been urged to do their bit to keep crooks out of their cars.

Officers from the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) took to the streets around Lund Park with the force’s mobile exhibition van to offer crime reduction advice to motorists.

As well as giving tips about preventing car theft, officers offered advice on making sheds more secure, while the police motorbike patrolled parkland to deter anti-social riders.

On the same day, last Thursday, staff from Bradford Council’s Street Cleansing Team, local residents and development workers helped clean up the Nashville Terrace area.

The police force’s feathery mascot, Detective Duck, provided crime prevention advice to children.

Sergeant Steph Fox said: “The summer months often see a rise in the number of drivers leaving their vehicles insecure and this obviously creates more opportunities for thieves.

“We would always advise owners to check their car doors before leaving vehicles, particularly if they have remote or central locking, as key fobs can sometimes fail to properly activate locks.”

She said the day of action had been well received and emphasised that officers were always available to provide crime prevention advice.

“We found residents were pleased to see us and we want to thank partners for their help in organising a very productive day,” she said.

“Our officers have all received enhanced training in crime prevention for residents who want to see how they can better protect homes or property can contact them.”

Among the security tips offered to motorists were: * never leave a car door unlocked or a window or sunroof open * never leave credit cards or cheque books in the glove compartment and don’t leave the vehicle documents in the car * lock anything of value in the boot – or, better still, remove completely * satellite navigation system harnesses should not be left attached to the windscreen, and don’t forget to wipe the suction marks off the windscreen.
