A Keighley sports leader has secured sponsorship for his school holiday soccer sessions from the college that taught him.

Chris Watson persuaded the Keighley Campus of Leeds City College to provide prizes for the Football Frenzy programme at Keighley Leisure Centre. Chris did a work placement at the leisure centre while taking his level two sport course at the college.

He went on to become a leisure attendant at the centre and has taken over the long-running Football Frenzy programme from its founder, centre manager Steve Kirby.

Football Frenzy, which attracts around 25 children per one-hour session, runs during school holidays for children aged between five and 13. Youngsters are encouraged to join the Tuesday and Thursday sessions to learn skills, take part in shoot-outs and small-sided games, and try to win footballs and kit.

Chris said: “It’s a great opportunity for them to learn new skills, meet new people and win prizes. I really enjoy the work – it proves that going to college and all the hard work and commitment paid off.”

Mr Kirby said Chris was a credit to the college, adding: “He initially came to the centre on work experience and his motivation and passion for sport really shone through.

“He is a hard-working and positive person. His work on the Football Frenzy programme has been a great asset to the leisure centre.”

Football Frenzy kicks off on Tuesday and continues through the summer holidays.

Sessions cost £1.75 per child. More information can be obtained from the leisure centre on 01535 681763.
