Wife died as a result of assault, police reveal
10:10am Thursday 16th August 2012 in Keighley
A woman whose 80-year-old husband is under arrest on suspicion of her murder died as a result of an assault, police have revealed.
The body of Eileen Callaghan, 76, was discovered at the couple’s home in Ivy Bank Lane, Haworth, on the morning of Sunday August 5.
The previous night, husband Clem had been taken to Airedale Hospital after being found unconscious at the wheel of his car in Colne following an apparent suicide attempt.
He remained in hospital as the Keighley News went to press yesterday and murder squad detectives were still waiting to question him.
A police spokesman said full results of tests into the cause of Mrs Callaghan’s death were not known, but indications were that she died from an assault.
Friends of the couple spoke of their shock at what had happened.
Mr Callaghan is a member of the Royal British Legion and is well-known in Haworth for his community involvement.
He had helped carry out work to improve the village war memorial.
