Young people join forces to organise festival

Keighley’s annual Tea in the Park is this year being organised by a group of young people.

The gathering in Lund Park next Saturday, September 15, from noon to 4pm will feature more activities than in previous years, including a cycling competition, drumming workshop, mobile skatepark, under-fives activities, a bouncy castle, DJs and face-painting.

Lund Park Community Group is overseeing the event, but has handed over the organisation to young people living in the area.

They have been drawn from youth groups at the Bangladeshi Community Centre, the Sue Belcher Community Centre and Small World community arts.

Tea in the Park is the culmination of the six-month project Love Thy Neighbour, which encouraged youngsters from different areas to work together.

Community group member Jo Horrox said Tea in the Park was aimed at families and would have something for all ages.

“It’s much bigger,” she said. “We’ve got a little bit for everyone. Young people have planned the whole event which has been fantastic, and they are offering their time on the day to run activities.

“We hope to get these young people to be part of the Lund Park group. We’ll help them set up other things in future and get involved.”

Local people are invited to have car boot sale-style tables selling bric-a-brac, at a cost of £10. Contact 665258 to book a place.
