Neighbours urged to help after nursery vandal spree

A Braithwaite nursery has issued a rallying call to nearby residents to help stop regular vandalism attacks.

Keighley Community Nursery has suffered repeated vandalism since moving to the site off Braithwaite Avenue seven years ago.

Fences are frequently broken, rubbish dumped and outdoor toys ruined, and last year a children's playhouse was torched.

Money raised to buy equipment for the children is having to be spent on repairs to the outside of the building.

Following the latest spate of damage the nursery's manager, Julie White, has issued a two-pronged appeal for support.

Local people are being invited to join a Volunteers Day next Saturday, September 29, to carry out repairs, maintenance, gardening and painting.

And people living in streets overlooking the nursery are being asked to watch out for anyone causing damage.

The nursery is next to the Rainbow Children's Centre, on Braithwaite Drive, and is run on a not-for-profit basis.

Julie said: “This is a community nursery and we need the community to help watch out for it.”

The Volunteers Day will be from 11am to 3pm, and will involve revamping the nursery exterior and its small garden.

Julie said: "We are hoping to get donations of paint from larger companies but will need volunteers to help.”
