New car park planned at East Riddlesden Hall
7:00am Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in Keighley
A new car park is set to be built at an historic hall.
Derelict farm buildings would be demolished to make way for the additional parking area at East Riddlesden Hall.
A planning application has been submitted to Bradford Council.
Carla Weatherall, visitor experience manager at the 17th-century National Trust property, said the existing car park was no longer big enough to cope with the numbers of visitors.
“The car park was built years ago when we were getting about 7,000 people per year. We’re now up to 37,000 and it can’t cope anymore,” she said.
“The farm buildings on the lower fields are dilapidated and unused, so we are looking to demolish those and flatten the area to provide extra spaces.”
She added that normally people would be able to park on the fields, but due to the exceptionally wet summer it had been impossible.
If the plans are approved, it is hoped demolition work could begin next month and the car park be ready for the start of the new season in February.
