Families were forced to flee after a lorry skidded on black ice and came to rest above a 15ft drop — dangerously close to their homes.

The driver of the HGV took a wrong turn down Ellar Carr Road, Cullingworth, skidded and crashed into the wall. Two fire crews from Keighley, one from Bingley and the Cleckheaton Major Rescue Unit were called to the scene at about 8pm, last Thursday. About 20 people were evacuated from Ellar Carr Mills flats, a housing complex in the valley below the road, while a recovery team from Keighley rescued the lorry.

Andy Morris, a spokesman at Bingley Fire Station, said he believed the driver had got lost heading for Station Road.
